Vikki is a close personal friend and the consummate diva; a mature fashionable lady always over dressed. Wherever she goes, people ask, how do you do it? Vikki is blessed with a petite figure but she also spends many hours practicing the walk and the talk until it’s perfected. Being single helps as she has free rein over her time but she’s also a perfectionist and has learned all the tricks of feminine presentation. What strikes me most however is her outgoing nature and her willingness to share and help others along the transgender path. She truly is a very special person.
Vikki emulates her late great Aunt Vikki, who worked with Burgdorf. Goodman ( In NYC). from the 40’s to the 70’s… always proper and always a Lady. As you’ll see in the interview, Vikki has used her knowledge of vintage clothes and dresses with the flair of bygone eras, but with a modern twist.
Vikki owns several businesses with a virtually unlimited budget for clothes, accessories and makeup. She is both a dealer and a collector of vintage clothing which is reflected in her style. She’s an active member and officer of the Pathways Transgender Support group in northern New Jersey and and an activist for the Transgender Day of Remembrance. Vikki is not your average crossdresser as you can see below, and certainly not at 58 in tall and 113 lbs. But this is Vikki La Fontaine. You have to love her !!!! as I do.
Interview with Vikki:
What is the secret to great style? To be able to mix and match without creating a boring monochromatic look or a color blob. No longer must your shoes and purse match your outfit creating a red/red/red or black/black/black look. Mix prints with solids or modern sportsware with classic looks.
What is the one thing you would spend a lot of money on? On myself as in makeup/waxing/skin treatments/diet/gym. Clothes do not make us the girl we are.(we’d never know that, Vikki LOL)
What is the one thing you wouldn’t spend a lot of money on? Nails and manipedies feel great but you can do them yourself and get a much greater feeling of reward. It’s therapeutic and you save cash at the same time. Best spend that money on something really special like a piece of fine jewelry. Accessories add the pizzazz to a backdrop of classic clothing.
How do you balance new trends with a more timeless look? Mixing old with new is not uncommon. Being a vintage clothier. I enjoy mixing classic vintage with modern twists either in shoes, jewelry, hair or makeup. Check out This Old Thing, the Vintage Clothes show.
What is your current obsession? Sequin Butterfly Tops. Popular in the 80’s a hidden timeless classic to be recognized can be paired with short skirts, pencil skirts, hobble skirts, jeggings, tights, with boots, booties or heels, even ballet flats.
Who inspires you? Classic, powerful fashion icons such as Joan Collins, Elizabeth Taylor, Audrey Hepburn and Jacqueline Kennedy,. These women are a never ending. DYNASTY. (Note from Tasi: See our story on Fashion Icons in the Library. Interestingly we had a discussion on modern fashion icons and Vikki despaired of icons comparable to her favorites, but I did think that Kate Middleton and Anna Wintour certainly fit the bill. They make fashion, not follow it)
Do you have a signature piece or style? Sequins, beads, silk, cocktail cruise style dresses from the 70’s-80’s. Glam, punk, Goth
What’s your secret to making yourself stand out? Simply put, presence… how I carry my self from within. Have enthusiasm about being out being out is a chance to be you. Enjoy the company of others dress always your best be very well put together mutually be inviting conversation complement others on how. They are dressed and there well being
The one piece of advice most cross dressers need but don’t get? You can stay at home and dress 24/7-365 but one day/night out on the town is more worth the experience and far more enjoyable and everlasting.
What’s the best piece of style wisdom you’ve ever received? Due to the fact I am micro in stature wear nude/ beige hose to lengthen the look of my legs and keep my skirts, dresses above my knee.
What is your favorite trend? At present bodycon and wiggle dresses.. Both are back in style along with the retro pinup look.
What would you not be caught dead in? Ugg boots, leggings, and sloppy fit or worn out sweat shirts.
What are your favorite web sites?. Two favorites are Ebay and Craigslist searching for vintage clothing. (Note from Tasi: there are vintage clothing stores on Sister House)
How would you describe your personal style? Mature, classy, elegant, and always overdressed for every occasion.
Who are your style icons? Movie Divas from the 40’s to the 80’s, notably those mentioned above. This was the age of style..
