Trans Movies

Here is our review of trans movies including those with a transgender or crossdressing theme (and a few draq queens too). Watch the trailers and click on the links to buy or rent the movies. I’ve watched many of these films but not all of them. You will have many enjoyable evenings ahead of you. A few are available on You Tube.

Comedies

10. Just One of the Guys, 1985 She’s 18, she’s beautiful and she’s about to set off an epidemic of comic hysteria when she enrolls in a new high school as JUST ONE OF THE GUYS. Trailer

9. Ed Wood, 1994 the hilarious, true-life story of the wackiest filmmaker in Hollywood history, Ed Wood. Trailer

8. White Chicks, 2004 Two disgraced FBI agent try to redeem themselves by taking their most difficult under assignment-to protect two socialites by posing as a pair of white girls at an exclusive upper class prep school! Trailer

7. Big Momma’s House, 2000 “Martin Lawrence brings down the house as Big Momma, an oversized, overbearing Southern granny with an attitude as tough as her pork chops. Trailer

6. The Bird Cage, 1996 Robin Williams stars as a gay Miami nightclub owner who is forced to play it straight and ask his drag-queen partner to hide out when Williams’s son invites his prospective–and highly conservative–in-laws and fiancée to a meet-and-greet dinner party. Trailer

5. To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything Julie Newmar, 1995 Wesley Snipes, Patrick Swayze and John Leguizamo star as three “girls” who just wanna have fun in a hilarious comedy about repairing broken hearts, broken dreams and broken nails. Trailer

4. Rocky Horror Picture Show, 1975 a screamingly funny, sinfully twisted salute to sci-fi, horror, B-movies and rock music, all rolled into one deliciously decadent morsel Trailer

3. Some Like It Hot, 1959 When Chicago musicians Joe (Tony Curtis) and Jerry (Jack Lemmon) accidentally witness a gangland shooting, they quickly board a southbound train to Florida, disguised as Josephine and Daphne, the twonewestand homeliestmembers of an all-girl jazz band Trailer

2. Mrs Doubtfire, 1993 Daniel Hillard (Robin Williams) is no ordinary father, so when he learns his ex-wife (Sally Field) needs a housekeeper, he applies for the job. With the perfect wig, a little makeup and a dress for all occasions, he becomes Mrs. Doubtfire, a devoted British nanny who is hired on the spot Trailer

1. Tootsie, 1982 Michael Dorsey is a talented actor, but his demanding nature and stubborn temperament have antagonized every producer in New York. Now his agent insists no one will hire him. But Michael needs money and to earn it, he’s willing to play the role of a lifetime Tootsie sets a new standard for unpredictable laugh-out-loud comedy. Trailer

Lolita, 1962 A wicked satire of sexual obsession, sadomasochism, & fetishism. When mild-mannered professor Humbert (Peter Sellers) arrives in small town of Ramsdale, he falls for Charlotte & her teen daughter, Lolita

Peter-Sellers---Lolita---film-UK--1962

Myra Breckinridge, 1970 The controversial, comedic tale of a gay man who has a sex-change operation in order to bilk his rich uncle out of his fortune    Trailer

I Want What I Want1972  a surprisingly touching, respectful, and accurate fictional portrayal of the coming out of a transgender woman in England in the early 1970’s. This film avoids nearly all of the “transploitation” themes of most works up to the 2000’s and is a “must see” for anyone interested in a transgender “coming out” historical fiction from 45 years ago. Even though the lead is played by a cisgender woman, this film gives us a hint of how we could have started out on a more positive media footing barely 2 years after Stonewall. There is a complete review of the film here

Raising Cain, 1992. a psychological thriller film staring John Lithgow, Lolita Davidovich and Steven Bauer. Carter Ni (John Lithgow) is a respected child psychologist but suffers from multiple personality disorder consisting of Cain, a street hustler, Josh, a shy 10-year old boy, and Margo, a middle-aged nanny.   Trailer

Orlando. 1993 This is an amazing, ironic film, based upon Virginia Woolf’s whimsically mock-serious epic about an immortal English lord, who experiences 400 years of history, changes his sex to that of a woman after refusing to participate in warfare (a feminist point that is subtly made), and never bores or condescends to us. Tilda Swinton is superb in both the male and female roles.

Just one of the Girls, 1993 Corey Haims character starts to get bullied at school, and after many attemps to make peace with the bully fail, he takes matters in to his own hands. He figures the only way to stay at the same school, yet not be recognized by the bully is to dress as a girl   Trailer

Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, 1994 This Academy Award-winning feel-good comedy won the hearts of moviegoers partly for its lavish costumes and devotion to Abba but mostly for the great performances of three drag artists who are on the road trip of a lifetime.   Trailer

Different for Girls 1996 What a brave and unusual romantic comedy. It is the story of two best friends who reunite as adults. Paul Prentice is still as irresponsible and childish as ever, working as a motorcycle courier and living in a very messy studio apartment, while Kim is poised, mature, and successful at her job writing greeting cards, a far cry from the bullied boy Prentice used to protect when they were in school. They struggle to reconnect as adults after a chance meeting, no longer having very much in common and with Prentice adjusting to seeing Kim as a woman rather than as the boy he once knew, until one night when everything changes and they must reassess their friendship and their lives.   Trailer

My Vie en Rose (My Life in Pink) 5 stars. 1997 Boys will be boys and girls will be girls, but one child isn’t so sure in this Belgian comedy drama. 7-year-old Ludovic is happy, healthy, and good-natured, but there’s a bit of a problem — he has decided that he’s a girl. While his parents Hanna and Pierre try to understand, Ludovic stubbornly refuses to listen to reason from his parents, teachers, or schoolmates.   Trailer

Art House, 1998 Well written, acted and produced movie with a wonderful cast that really moves along. Hysterical references (love the slimy agent paraphrasing star wars) and lots of jokes within jokes… you don’t have to live in hell-A to get them

Beautiful Boxer, 1998 Based on the true story of Thailand’s famed transgendered kickboxer, Beautiful Boxer is a poignant action drama that punches straight into the heart and mind of a boy who fights like a man so he can become a Art House   Trailer

Boys Don’t Cry 1999  This is an excellent film, however the subject is heart wrenching. The film isn’t about a girl masquerading as a man or about a confused lesbian. These terms have unfortunately been equated with the film and are inaccurate. Brandon was an FTM, a transgendered person/transexual who was pre-op.and deals with Brandon’s affirmation of his true self.   trailer

Iron Ladies, 2000 an exuberant comedy about the journey of a volleyball team composed largely of transsexuals, drag queens, and effeminate gay men to the 1996 Thai male championships.   Trailer

Hedwig and the Angry Inch, 2001 This is the story of Hedwig, an ambitious glam-rocker who comes to America determined to find fame, fortune, and his “other half.”   Trailer

Normal, 2003 Ray and Irma are a devoted couple living a normal life in rural Illinois, until Roy decides that his life must change and confesses to Irma that he’s a woman trapped in a man’s body. What happens to a town, a factory and a loving marriage when confronted with such a transformation is all about being who you are, being in love, and simply being normal.   Trailer

Pink Flamingos, 2004 This notorious gross-out cult classic portrays a competition to decide who is the world’s most disgusting person.   Trailer

transamericaTransAmerica  2006   Emmy® winner Felicity Huffman won the Best Actress (Drama) Golden Globe® Award for her “fiercely funny and deeply powerful” performance that is “thrilling to watch.” Huffman plays Bree Osbourne, a conservative transsexual woman, who learns she is the parent of a long-lost 17-year-old son. The wheels of fortune take Bree and son on a cross-country adventure, including a memorable visit with Bree’s parents, that will change both of their lives. A funny, touching, completely original look at the modern American family, “TRANSAMERICA will leave you in a state of movie euphoria. It’s hilarious and deeply affecting.”    Trailer

Flawless 2007 Flawless’ is an offbeat story about Walter Koontz (Robert De Niro) an ex-cop who suffers a stroke and loses partial ability to speak. In an effort to regain some of his speech capabilities it is recommended to him that he take singing lessons. So he decides to ask his neighbor Rusty (Philip Seymour Hoffman), who is a female impersonator, to give him singing lessons. This is an unlikely pairing because Walter is a belligerent homophobe. Both the comedy and drama are great.   Trailer

Ticked Off Trannies With Knives, 2012 When the innocent and likable Bubbles Cliquot shows up for her nightly stage performance with a black eye, her transgender sisters suspect foul play from her latest boy toy. In an attempt to get Bubbles back to her bubbly self, the girls take her out for a relaxed night of cocktails at a local gay bar    Trailer

Dallas Buyers Club 2014 This film received Emmy’s for the Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor (Rayon) roles. I saw the movie and they were well deserved, although some in the trans community are up in arms because a trans actress was not considered for the role of Rayon and again, the trans character doesn’t reflect well on the trans community. But it was based on true events.. Trailer

Boy Meets Girl  2015  This was such a sweet and inspiring film. I’m so glad they used transgender actress (Michelle Henley) instead of using non transgender actresses as they have in the past. This story takes place in a small town where everyone knows Ricky is Trans but most everyone treats her with respect. It’s basically a love story with a couple of twists and secrets. All the actors were great and I was emotionally invested in each of them for different reasons.   Trailer

The Danish Girl   2015   The 1920s-set story begins with famous landscape artist Einar Wegener (Redmayne), who shared an idyllic life and marriage in Copenhagen with wife, Gerda (Vikander), an aspiring artist of her own. She’s more interested in painting portraits, but when she can’t find a model for a particular piece she turns to Einar to model as a woman. The sensation in his eyes upon feeling the soft touch of female garments is like an awakening of the spirit. Something inside him has been unleashed and can’t be bottled back up. With the help of their ballerina friend (Amber Heard), Einar’s alter ego is christened “Lili”and it isn’t long before she begins to dominate their lives. Einar practically disappears as Lili takes over, leaving Gerda to wonder what has happened to her husband. At one point she practically begs to see her husband again, but Einar is so far gone into becoming Lili that he simply refuses. He wants to live a life as Lili, as the woman he feels himself to be, even if that destroys his once-perfect marriage. Here’s an excellent review of the movie from TG Life with a link to streaming the movie online.    Trailer

The Danish GirlThe above montage, while representative of trans movies, is certainly not inclusive. You might want to explore this list for some of your other favorites.

The Body Shape Compendium

The Body Shape Compendium addresses all those questions that you may have about body shape, and why it is worth knowing about body shape for a crossdresser or transgender woman. This section is being continually updated so check back occasionally for new information.

What does knowing your body shape really tell you?

Given the number of magazine articles written on the subject, it’s obviously something that is considered to be an important factor in the whole “finding flattering clothing” issue that many women face and conversely, us too, if your appearance is important to you. Sister House is all about style for the TG woman and this is an important component to creating that desirable feminine image. Clothes doth make the person for it’s how we are judged on first impressions. Many of our other faults as male bodies in female clothing can be overcome with the judicious use of the right garments worn in the right way.

Body shape is your outline, from the front (pretty much) it’s your silhouette. We determine your shape based on the differences between shoulders (not bust), waist and hips/upper thigh. It does not take into consideration your upper arms, your knees or calves, or your body proportions, whether you are petite or tall, the roundness or flatness of your bottom or all the other body variations.

Here are some important body shape facts as we learn why clothes may fit you, but they may not flatter you. Why? because they were designed for models with an hourglass shape and not yours. Only 15% of women claim to have that neat hourglass shape.

Body shape statisticsAnd yes, it is important, but no, it’s not everything. Personality can be more important than body shape when choosing outfits and garments. But now I’m going to share with you what knowing your body shape will tell you and how you can use some of my magicians toolbox of rules, to use these illusions to flatter your figure.

Our clothing choices reflect and affect us. We know this. When we gradually learn to use our clothing lines, shapes, colors, textures, and patterns to reflect or communicate our personality traits, our values, interests, roles, and goals, that’s image from the inside out. When we create an attractive image on the outside and experience a positive response from others, that’s a positive effect of image from the outside in.

Take a good look at the difference in the attention going to the body of this model wearing a form fitting dress with basic fitting ease, on the left, as compared to a looser-fitting dress with added fashion ease, on the right. With a little more fitting or fashion styling ease, the clothing silhouette becomes dominant and the body becomes subordinate. You not only look slimmer, but you feel slimmer, more confident, and able to forget about the shape of your body.

What you will find here

As noted above, you will learn about clothing lines, shapes, colors, textures, and patterns and how your choices effect the clothes you buy and wear. We’ll look closely at the body shapes (and they go by different names sometimes) and then we’ll show you what clothes look best on those body shapes and why.. Each of these choices is a broad subject until itself, so follow the links for a more comprehensive discussion of each subject.

Determining your body shape

So let’s have a look at 5 basic female body shapes.

There are several ways to define your body shape. The most basic way to do it is to determine if you are either a

 body shapes

You can  split these main categories in sub categories to further customize your body shape, but let’s keep it simple for now.

How do you find out which one you are?

Characteristics of the hourglass:

  • Well defined (narrow) waist
  • Hip and bust tend to be almost the same and quite big

Characteristics of the inverted rectangle are:

  • Shoulders are wider than the hip
  • Bust tends to be proportionally large
  • Hips are small

Characteristics of the rectangle are:

  • No defined waist
  • The hips tend to have a similar width as the shoulders
  • You do not have a lot of curves
  • Your bust tends to be small or average

Characteristics of the pear:

  • The hips are wider than the shoulder
  • Fat tends to accumulated on the hips and buttocks

Characteristics of the apple

  • No defined waist
  • Weight tends to form on the stomach
  • Average bust size

Still not sure, then check this body shape calculator.

Now  click on the links above the picture for a detailed explanation of how to dress for that body shape.

Determining and dressing your vertical body type

Understanding and dressing for your vertical body could be significant for crossdressers and all those with a male body structure as it deals with the proportions of the body and how being short-waisted or long-waisted effects your choice of clothes.

Have a look at the image below. The body is divided into four sections:

  1. The top of the head to the nipple line (with bra on).
  2. The nipple line to the hip line (fullest part of the bottom).
  3. The hipline to the center of the kneecap.
  4. The kneecap to the floor.

vertical body typesAlmost everyone has different proportions and women can be placed in one of three main categories: the balanced body, long leg-short torso, or short torso-long leg. A detailed explanation with drawings is here.

Practically speaking however, one of the easiest ways to dress your body is to find a celebrity with your body shape and follow her examples. Justine Leconte is my go-to fashion designer and in this video she gives us examples of celebrities with your body shape. Once you know that, you can Google on the celebrity, or better yet, go to  Pinterest (largest search engine next to Google) for the many examples of that celebrity’s style. Lastly, create a Lookbook of your celebrity’s styles and use it when shopping. Go to the original article where the pic is embedded and often you will find the source where you can buy the product.

What’s Your Style Personality

A woman’s fashion says who she is, and it’s expressed by her style personality. Most of us lean toward one particular type of style personality, although we may sometimes wear styles that are more closely related to another.

What’s your style personality? Do you view yourself as having a classic, romantic, sophisticate, natural/casual or creative style? Your style is a reflection of who you are as a person. It is looking at the inside in order to reflect your true self on the outside. So how do you dress to show off your true style?

There are many style personality quizzes on the internet. These are the two best that I have found, Perfectly Me and My Private Stylist. Terry Ghio at Perfectly Me is perhaps a more classic approach and yields excellent results based on just 8 questions. Ann Reintein at My Private Stylist is perhaps a bit more comprehensive as it’s based on actual style selections. Take both and see what you think.

Perfectly Me

Perfectly.Me can help you determine your Style Personality and create a look book of clothes to match. Most women are a mix of 2 style personalities … One dominant style category and another sub-style. For example, you could be a Classic-Creative or Romantic-Natural.

The 5 Style Personalities are:

Style Personality: Classic

Style icons: Kate Middleton, Angelina Jolie, Eva Longoria, Dita Von Teese, Victoria Beckham

The Classic woman likes tailored, no-nonsense, timeless pieces that avoid any drama about how they dress. This woman often has a sub-style to add to the core Classic qualities. For example, Classic-Romantic or Classic-Creative.

Style Elements for the Classic Woman:
• Traditionally tailored details
• Prefers matching or highly coordinated outfits and accessories
• Jackets are very important to add power and finish
• Hairstyles are also classic cuts like a bob, never too trendy
• Refined quality fabrics and colors
• Understated and professional is the #1 goal

Style Personality: Romantic

Style icons: Taylor Swift, Zooey Deschanel, Blake Lively, Rachel Zoe

The Romantic Personality can be a core or sub style. This woman is all about femininity and loves being a “girly-girl.” Romantic women love to wear pretty garments, accessories and dainty details. Ruffles work for some; others prefer soft prints or soft color combinations to achieve the charming-feminine look. Romantic sub style can pair with Creative or Classic for a truly unique and personal wardrobe.

Style Elements for the Romantic Woman:
• Soft, supple fabrics with flowing lines
• Lots of skirts and dresses
• Graphic floral prints and soft colors
• Antique or dainty details
• Hair and Nails done regularly
• Charming Femininity is the #1 goal

Style Personality: Sophisticate

The Sophisticate woman is dramatic and hip with a lot of urban flair! Black and white often shows up in her closet and she is unique, stylish but not a slave to fashion. For example, one item or detail in an outfit will stand out as unique and on trend ensuring an interesting twist.

Style Elements for the Sophisticate Woman:
• Modern, well tailored, European look
• Minimal use of color, high contrast
• Details are sleek and architectural looking
• High heels and boots with sleek, pointy toes
• Solid colors, black and white or all black predominant
• Dramatic and High Style is the #1 goal

Style Personality: Natural/Casual

Style icons:  Olivia Palermo, Miranda Kerr, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Gwen Stephani, Jessica Alba, Kristen Stewart, Cameron Diaz

A Natural Styled woman loves her jeans, knits and layers. Many clothing pieces are inspired by or actual athletic wear. Dressing for comfort is the # 1 concern.

Some Natural Women find it hard to “dress up.” Solid colors and clean lines are more appealing. Simple jewelry ads polish and finishes the look. Hair is pulled back into a ponytail and the focus on makeup is minimal and a natural look is preferred.

Style Personality: Creative

Style icons:  Vanessa Hudgens, Rooney Mara, Amber Heard, Alexa Chung, Kate Bosworth, Rihanna, Diane Kreuger, Kim Kardashian, Miley Cyrus, Lady Gaga

Many women add an element of Creative Personality to their core style for a truly individual look that says “I am Modern, Original and Artistic!”

Style Elements for the Creative Women:
• Unusual color combinations and interesting details
• Unique and unexpected mixing of fabrics and accessories
• Elaborate adornment
• Designer and Vintage clothing
• Bold, one of kind jewelry
• Trendy and unique is the #1 Goal
